These days, life may be uncertain and rocky, but we get to enjoy the golden age of film and television. Never before have we had so many great shows to watch at home, on vacation, or waiting in line at the DMV. Whether we're hanging out at home, on a long flight, or waiting in line at the DMV, we never have to be without all of the great films and TV shows.
I would argue that the quality of shows and movies available to us are also higher than they have ever been before. With so many streaming apps and streaming sites to choose from, many networks have found that the age-old, recycled, lowest common denominator trash that they pumped out for years is no longer going to cut it. This increased competition, this increased emphasis on quality results in us, the viewer, having more amazing movies and shows to choose from.
With new production studios now on the scene, it's clear that quality in films and television is on the rise. I think a lot of this success can be attributed to Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video, who have been releasing award-winning and critically acclaimed content that is only available on their streaming platforms. And as more people want access to these great programs, it's only natural that other production studios would follow suit.
There are a lot of new premium streaming apps and original streaming services being created all the time now. This is good because it makes it more competitive, but it also makes it hard to decide which ones to subscribe to.
What are some things that you look for in a streaming app? Personally, I think that variety and quality of content are the most important factors. If a streaming app doesn't offer the shows and movies that you want to see, there is little point in downloading it. The first thing to look at before choosing a streaming app is content.
The next most important thing, according to me, is how well a streaming app is designed and what kinds of features it offers. If the streaming app crashes often or is difficult to use, it's not really worth using. You want your streaming app to provide excellent user experience, great design, and tons of useful features that make your movie and TV binging as enjoyable as possible.
After you've weighed the pros and cons of each streaming app, you need to decide if the price is worth it. Most streaming apps are priced around $5-10/month, but there are some that go up to $20/month. I think a streaming app has to offer a lot more than that in order for it to be worth the cost.
The app we will be looking at today is Vudu. It's free to sign up for and you can stream thousands of movies and TV shows for $0. However, there are ads that you'll have to put up with. We'll talk about that in a moment.
History
Vudu was founded on January 1st, 2004. It started out creating set-top boxes (Vudu Box and Vudu XL) but has since switched to streaming services and video on demand. Founder Alain Rossman and Tony Miranz acquired the company Walmart in March of 2010.
Design
I like the design of Vudu. It has a refreshing theme that makes it stand out from other premium streaming apps of its type. Although it has the standard black background, the refreshing splashes of bright sky blue differentiate it from the others. Vudu looks great, and its functionality is even better.
I really like the layout of Vudu. It is simple, easy to use, and practical. There are a few main categories at the top of the app: Home, Rentals, Deals, TV, Kids, and then a few select genres. Just click on the tab of what you are looking for and browse through a new set of thumbnail images.
At the bottom of the app, you'll find a parallel user menu. Here, you can check out Vudu's Spotlight (featured films and shows, Search, My Vudu, Free, and Settings. I really like this sandwiched menu design, which makes it one of the most user-friendly and intuitive premium streaming apps on the market today.
Content
Vudu has a lot of movies and TV shows to choose from. One of the things I like about it is that they don't have too many network or production studio favorites. They have a lot of new movies from Paramount, 21st Century Fox, and all of the traditional movie studios. But they also have films from Netflix and Disney (Disney Plus is not the only way to watch Disney movies these days!).
Although there are movies and shows available to stream with your Vudu membership, the majority of the content that Vudu has to offer are titles that can be rented or purchased digital copies of directly from the app. This separates Vudu from other premium streaming apps, which usually only have movies and shows available for streaming. It is something like a completely digital version of Blockbuster with some elements of Netflix.
With Vudu, you can stream your content online or download it to watch offline. You can also link other streaming accounts so that one convenient location contains all of your movies.
Pricing and Plans
So, I know that I recently said that Vudu was a completely free streaming app. And that wasn't entirely misleading. It is free to download, free to use, and there is a solid selection of free content for you to stream. However, where Vudu makes the bulk of their money comes from the fact that most titles are only available to stream via renting or buying. This model might not be for everyone, but by doing it this way, Vudu is able to offer a much larger selection than many of the other streaming apps out there. Prices of the movies, of course, differ depending on how new and popular they are.
Suggestions that I have for Vudu
I think that Vudu's app is wildly successful. I'm not a huge fan of having to rent or buy my movies in the digital age, because I think it's a bit of an antiquated way of offering content. So, my main suggestion is to offer an alternate way of using Vudu- like giving us the option to pay per month and access a broader range of titles without a rental or purchase necessary.
