This was definitely the case with Video Land. In fact, I'm surprised that it took me so long to get around to reviewing this one. Not only has it been around for over a decade now, but it is renowned for its high-quality content. In fact, in the Netherlands, the only real competition that Video Land has is Netflix- no other premium streamers are even near the same level as Video Land.
One of the best movie streaming sites in the known universe is what makes this one great. It has a user-friendly site design and interface, hundreds of great movies and series, HD streaming, and fair subscription fees.
Video Land's vast selection of top shows and movies is what stands out most to me. Although it sometimes varies, generally speaking, there are a lot of great choices available here. You could subscribe to Video Land any month of any year and be sure to find hundreds of popular shows and award winning movies.
Not only does Video Land have a large selection of movies and series from all over the world, but they also have 700+ Dutch films and shows that are straight from the ground. It would not be difficult to argue that Video Land is the best movie streaming site in the Netherlands - possibly one of the best movie streaming sites in the world.
It hasn't been that long since Video Land came into being, having been in the movie business for nearly four decades now. Recently, they transitioned to an OTT streaming service; however, their origins date back even further. Watch out though - because their latest venture might just be their best yet!
History
Nico Broerson and Gerard Van Stijn, the founders of Video Land, opened the first store in 1984. Philips took over as the official owner of Video Land between 1992 and 1996, but Weird to think of a corporation being the owner of a company, but hey corporations are considered individuals in the eyes of the law. At any rate Philips proved to be a pretty competent leader because in 2004 Video Land opened its 200th store.
As Blockbuster learned the hard way in the United States, streaming services threatened to put an end to the entire video rental store industry (at least the brick & mortar model) by the end of the first decade of this century. Video Land was not immune to this pressure either. In fact, it got so bad that their parent company, Entertainment Retail Group, filed for bankruptcy in 2010. Moving Pictures Holding went on to purchase the Video Land business model and franchise, which is when the pivot to streaming began for the brand.
Video Land's on demand streaming service has been available since 2010. It was promising at first, and RTL Nederland acquired a 65% stake in the company in 2013. Since then, RTL Nederland has been the full owners of Video Land, and they have abandoned the brick & mortar model entirely. Not a single Video Land location remains open today.
Since 2015, Video Land has been producing their own original content, which has been popular with Dutch and international moviegoers alike. Today, some of the best Dutch movies and TV series owe their success to Video Land's knack for quality. Despite no longer existing in the physical world, Video Land is doing very well in the digital sphere.
Design
As a great movie streaming site, Video Land has an intuitive, sharp-looking, and dynamic interface. It won't stray too far from the tried-and-true layout and structure of other streaming sites, making it easy for anybody who has used Netflix or Hulu before.
Video Land will greet you with an extra-large banner that alternates featured or promoted series and movie posters. If you'd rather browse, though, you can do so by accessing a menu of genres just below the banner. Filters are available to choose from hundreds upon hundreds of titles in a variety of genres. Choose from action, animation, documentary, fantasy, horror, family, etc.
Keep scrolling down and you can browse a descending list of menu rows, separated by content type. You know the drill; I'm sure: watch again, popular, trending, etc. One way in which Video Land differentiates itself from the standard Netflix design is its inclusion of a dashboard along the right-hand side of the page. Here, you can browse content more generally - by content type (series, movies, kids, etc.) - as well as access your downloads, search bar, and account/settings.
Every aspect of this movie streaming site is easy to use, stylish, modern, dynamic, and convenient. If you want to be considered the best movie streaming site in the Netherlands, this is exactly what your site should look like.
Content and Features
As I mentioned earlier, in Video Land, quality is key. Video Land, however, doesn't ask its members to sacrifice quantity for quality ? or vice versa. With this movie streaming site, not only do you get hundreds of movies and TV series, but you get some of the biggest hits, most critically acclaimed films and series, and a great blend of international and Dutch titles.
As of this writing, there are 728 Dutch movies and shows available on Video Land. With new movies and series added on a regular basis, this number is expected to continue to increase. Out of these 700+ Dutch movies and series, users will find plenty of their favorite movies and shows, as well as a great selection of Video Land originals.
Video Land has a large selection of international movies and TV series. Many of these movies and series are popular American and British titles that aren't commonly found on other Dutch movie streaming sites. Additionally, there are 281 international TV series to enjoy.
Some additional features that are noteworthy: One of the best deals in the world of streaming subscriptions is Video Land. Members can stream on up to four screens at the same time, and they can download titles and stream offline.
Mobile and Desktop Experience
I have some good news and some bad news for mobile streamers. The good news is that Android users will have no problem using the elegant and intuitive app that is available on the Google Play Store. However, I was unable to find an app called Video Land on the Apple App Store, so this may not be available to iOS users yet. Hopefully this gets addressed soon.
There is a fair amount of cross-platform compatibility with Video Land, though there are some differences in how accessible it is depending on the device. Video Land can be viewed via Chrome Cast, Apple TV, Ziggo Box, and PlayStation. However, its one fatal flaw might be its relatively short list of compatible devices.
Pricings and Plans
One of the things I love about Video Land is that they offer three subscription tiers - Base, Plus, and Premium. The Base membership is ad-free; Plus members get extended streaming hours and access to exclusive content; and the Premium membership offers even more perks, such as access to exclusive content and no ads. The prices and benefits for each membership tier are as follows:
Base has a monthly plan that allows for one screen to be used at a time, without downloading, and it is not available on all devices.
With Plus (? 7.99/month), you get 2 additional screens to view downloads and manage devices. Plus works on all compatible devices.
This is a premium plan with 4 screens, downloads, and access to all devices.
No matter which package you choose, Video Land is an affordable movie streaming site with tons of value. And did I mention that each option comes with a 14-day free trial?
