I don't know about you, but for me watching online video content has become an enjoyable pastime. It's so easy for me to just fall down the rabbit hole of online videos. I can easily get sucked in for hours at a time. All it takes is clicking on one video and, poof, the next thing I know five hours have gone by. It's quite incredible, really.
One of my favorite nights is the one where I intentionally go down the YouTube rabbit hole. I never have to run out of fascinating, fun, interesting, educational, baffling, or hilarious video content. Even when the night bleeds into the morning, or well into the afternoon.
Sometimes, watching a video once or twice just isn't enough. For the occasional video, you need to have it on your hard drive ? do you know what I mean? First of all, it can be annoying to have to find the link and revisit it every single time you want to watch the video. Plus, being able to watch the video in question depends entirely on you being around a reliable internet signal. Sometimes we cannot predict the future. Sometimes our internet goes out. Sometimes you want to watch a particular video during a time when you cannot access wifi - say, for instance, on a flight.
The addon we will be taking a look at today is aptly called "Video Download Helper" and it helps you to download videos. This addon is convenient because it works with both Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Plus, this addon is free to install, so it's a great choice for anyone who likes to watch their favorite videos online but doesn't have access to an internet connection often.
Video DownloadHelper is a helpful addon for downloading videos that do not have download links or for HTTPS links. It makes downloading videos easy and straightforward, making it a game-changer. Let's dive in and take a closer look at what Video DownloadHelper has to offer, shall we?
History
Video DownloadHelper is the third most popular extension on Mozilla Firefox. It comes in third after AdBlock Plus and UBlock Origin. Furthermore, Video DownloadHelper is the second most popular Mozilla recommended addon. As of December of 2019, it had a grand total of 2,848,968 users. That number, I presume, has only grown larger over time.
Video Download Helper is a free software that users can use to download videos from the internet. This software relies on donations from users, many of whom are grateful enough for the software that they are willing to pay for it even though it is free. Video Download Helper also pays forward a lot of its donations to causes via Kiva - a site that lets individuals donate to charitable organizations, individuals in need, and communities of their choice. As of March 3rd, 2020, Video Download Helper has donated $154,825 to 4,413 individual projects on Kiva.
This is something that I think more tech companies and organizations should be doing. Therefore, I am more than happy to either donate to Video Download Helper, or to purchase the premium version of the extension if I find that it might be useful. It's rare that a software company goes out of its way to make a difference, and I believe that we should reward them for doing so.
Design
I don't believe that we will be able to have too drawn out a discussion of Video Download Helper's design, but it is fairly easy to install and use. Simply click on the extension's icon in the corner of your browser of choice and a dropdown menu will appear. From there, you have a few options: Quick Download, Download and Convert, Add to Blacklist, Details, Delete, or Pin. So, very simple, easy to use and about as user-friendly as it gets, really.
Plus, Video DownloadHelper comes with a download manager, so you can keep track of all of your downloads, their statuses, and quick access to the videos once they finish downloading. It's really simple.
Content
Video DownloadHelper helps you download videos from websites like YouTube, Dailymotion, and Vidio. It also helps you convert videos to other formats. Maybe you're like me and don't want to have to go to sketchy third-party websites in order to convert YouTube videos to MP3s - well, thanks to Video DownloadHelper, that won't have to happen anymore! Just click the extension and, voila, access an MP3 file of your favorite music video.
Video DownloadHelper can download and convert videos, as well as aggregate videos. You can merge several separate videos into one singular file for download, or create your own customized video playlists and video compilations with just a few clicks.
With Video Download Helper, you can also download photos and entire photo albums with ease. This extension ensures that you never lose a photo again on Facebook or any other social media resource.
Unfortunately, though, the ability to do certain things with Video Download Helper using Chrome over Firefox is somewhat limited. And even more so if you are using Chrome over Firefox. For example, you cannot download YouTube videos with Video Download Helper in Google Chrome. Firefox users, on the other hand, can truly make the most of Video Download Helper. If Chrome were not so convenient, I would say it might be time to consider a switch.
Pricing and Plans
The basic version of Video Download Helper is free to use, but if you want access to the extension's premium features - such as no download restrictions, no watermark on converted videos, and the ability to convert to audio-only formats - it will cost you a bit.
For a lifetime subscription to Video Download Helper, you can choose to pay a one-time fee of $14.99 or pay monthly for $0.99 per month and enjoy premium service with Video Download Helper Premium. Or, if you prefer paying yearly for a lifetime premium membership at only $8.99 per year, you can do that as well. If you have any questions about the different payment plans or membership levels, just ask me - I'm happy to offer my opinion!
Otherwise, you're already paying twice that for just two years! But you can also always just try it for a month for a buck and see if you like it first. The prices, I think, for the premium subscription to Video Download Helper are more than fair.
Suggestions that I have for Video Download Helper
I would like to see the addon's capabilities expanded a little bit more when it comes to Google Chrome. I hate the fact, for example, that I cannot download YouTube videos with Video Download Helper on Chrome. However, this is most likely more of an issue with Google than it is with Video Download Helper, seeing as you are able to do this on the Firefox version.
An app could never hurt. If I could use Video Download Helper directly on my phone, that would be awesome. But as a desktop extension, it is excellent.
