Design
Although free movie streaming sites are not usually known for their high-quality website designs, I still tend to expect a little more from sites like this. I believe that a free movie streaming site can also be a high-quality movie streaming site.
I do not believe that any free movie streaming site is up to par with the design standards of Netflix or Hulu. Although I have used such sites in the past, I realize that there are many different designs out there and not all of them should be held to the same high standards.
I really enjoy sites like Sling, Viki, and a few others that offer free movie streaming. So, when I see Tamil Gun, I'm a bit disappointed because it doesn't provide the same level of immersive, dynamic, and intuitive user experience as some of the other sites I enjoy. It just seems lazy to me when Tamil Gun just presents itself plainly as a free movie streaming site.
Actually, ?plain? is something of an understatement. I think ?unprofessional? would be a better description of this free movie streaming site. It is inconsistent and, in places, appears to even be unfinished. This site was clearly thrown together, seemingly at the last possible second by somebody who just barely knows how to code. The lack of attention to detail here is troubling. Just look at the section labeled HD Movies. Not only does the text and graphic look like bad clip art, but the design grid was left in the background; this couldn't have been an intentional aesthetic decision, right? No, this is just lazy design.
Lastly, below the main content of the website is a small text box that reads "Browse Accounts".
There is little to no logical organization to this site. I will take you through the home page alone, from top to bottom. Below the site menu bar (which we will get to in a moment), you'll find a selection of 8 titles, the Latest Videos section. Below this is the aforementioned HD Videos category. Then, for reasons that are unbeknownst to me, you have another segregated section dedicated to, well, More HD Videos (there has to have been a more elegant way to streamline these into one larger category, no?). Lastly, below the main content of the website is a small text box that reads "Browse Accounts".
Below you will find a different format for kids movies. Some of the TV channel icons are separated by a random selection of movies, and it's not clear what the rest of this page is about. The site builder seems to have abandoned this part of the website, which is unfortunate because it could be really helpful.
There are also some social media icons on the right side of the menu bar.
Scroll back up to the top of the page to find the site menu bar. This offers a little more help when it comes to navigating the site and finding what you're looking for. Here, you can jump to various key areas of the site, including Home, HD Movies, Kids Movies, Dubbed Movies, Big Boss Tamil 4 (which deserves its own section on the site menu bar for some reason?), a dropdown menu for TV Series with only one option to choose from: Tamil Web Series, TV Shows, and Hindi (which also has a dropdown menu; this time linking to 2 other languages), as well as some social media icons on the right side of the menu bar.
This is one of the most randomly chaotic free movie streaming sites I've ever seen. From a design standpoint, Tamil Gun needs a lot of work (a whole overhaul of the site entirely; I would say detonate this and start from scratch).
Content and Features
Despite its subpar design and difficulty in navigating, Tamil Gun offers a lot of free movies. Additionally, the site offers several different languages to choose from, making it a great resource for movies in Tamil as well as other languages. Finally, Tamil Gun is great for finding over dubbed movies, making it a great free movie streaming site for international releases.
Although the site frequently claims that its movies and TV shows are in HD quality, unfortunately, this is not always the case. There are several movies that I attempted to play that were of a very low quality, even when 720p HD quality had been selected.
One fun quirk about the Tamil Gun is that it has a built-in radio station, Sooriyan FM. As a music lover, I think this is really cool. It creates an ambiance as you search for the free movie that you wish to watch.
If you find a movie you like, another nice feature is that there are often several embedded streams provided. In the event that one host server is slow or not working for whatever reason, with certain titles (where available) you have backup options. This is definitely a welcomed feature since it can be endlessly frustrating when you are watching a free movie stream and suddenly there is a network error, and the movie won't buffer or load back up. Tamil Gun has provided (when possible) some backup options.
Mobile and Desktop Experience
There is no mobile app for Tamil Gun. It's not that surprising - free movie streaming sites don't often have mobile apps.
That being said, I'm happy to report that Tamil Gun's mobile site is optimized for mobile devices. So, if you don't mind having to stream free movies from your phone or tablet's web browser, then Tamil Gun is actually one of the more mobile-friendly free movie streaming sites out there.
Another strength of Tamil Gun is that it has relatively few ads. I've never seen a free streaming site without ads (you have to pay for the servers and web hosting somehow, right?), but there are certainly some that are much better than others. And compared to some of the free streaming sites that I've seen that bombard you with invasive ads, Tamil Gun is pretty ad light. With a decent ad blocker, you can stream free movies for hours without ever being interrupted by an ad on this site.
Suggestions that I have for Tamil Gun
I don't really like Tamil Gun. I think it's a shame because the site has the potential to be really great - especially for free streaming in India. There are definitely some missing pieces, particularly an intuitive and professional design, but I hope they can improve things with a cosmetic makeover. And maybe adding some filters and a search engine wouldn't be too bad either.
