Which premium streaming service will be right for me? It can be hard to decide which one to choose when there are so many amazing choices out there. Some services have high monthly prices, while others offer more variety. Which one should I subscribe to?
This is why it is important to figure out which premium streaming apps are the best before picking them. You can do this by looking at how well the app performs and which ones have features that are valuable to you. Then, how do you find the best premium streaming apps? By looking at the app store and reading reviews.
I assess a streaming app's content when considering whether to purchase it. After all, what good is a great app if it doesn't have loads of great shows and movies to choose from? Am I right? If an app only offers shows no one has ever heard of before, then nobody would want to download it.
If you're looking for a streaming service with award-winning or nominated series and films or something to interest you, there are plenty of options out there. However, before choosing one, it's important to decide whether you want a niche service that offers specific content interests or if you'd rather have a more general streaming experience that has a great variety of different kinds of content.
If you're looking for a streaming service with a large variety of content, Stan TV might be the perfect choice for you. With contracts that have nabbed some impressive rights, Stan TV is one of the best streaming services I've come across. In fact, it has contracts with some of the most well-known studios and networks in the world. So if you're looking for something to watch on your way to work or while you're relaxing at home, Stan TV is definitely worth checking out!
But anyone who is familiar with streaming apps knows that there is more to consider than just the content. The best premium streaming apps offer great design, plenty of features, and a fair price. So without further ado, let's dive in and take a look at Stan TV and see if it is worth your time and money.
History
Perhaps the best way to discuss the history of Stan would be to take a trip through its content acquisition. Stan TV launched in January of 2015, and its release coincided with the premiere of Better Call Saul. Stan also received exclusive rights to Breaking Bad (which, prior to Stan, only aired on Foxtel in Australia). These weren?t the only big-name shows that Stan offered from the very beginning. It also provided users with Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle.
Stan acquired partnership deals with a variety of Sony, ABC, SBS, Viacom, MGM, BBC Worldwide, Showtime, CBS, Village Roadshow and Warner Bros.often in its early days. Success was imminent for Stan.
On December 15th of 2014, Stan TV signed an agreement with ABC Commercial, which included hundreds of hours of archived Australian ABC content, including the popular series Summer Heights High, Janet King, Ja?mie: Private School Girl, Jack Irish, Upper Middle Bogan, Bob the Builder, The Moodys, and Angelina Ballerina (to name but a few).
On December 17th of 2014, Stan signed non-exclusive agreements with Viacom in order to feature shows from MTV, Comedy Central, and Nickelodeon. This gave Stan the rights to offer shows like SpongeBob SquarePants, iCarly, Teen Mom, South Park, Tosh.0, My Super Sweet Sixteen, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Reno 911.
In 2014, Stan continued to grow and acquired content from Warner Bros, the Nine Network, and Paramount Pictures. In the following years, Stan would compete with Netflix for content dominance. Something tells me that Stan is only getting started when it comes to acquiring the best possible content.
Design
I really enjoy the design of Stan. It has a sleek and professional look to it. With a refreshing theme that is largely blue and black, it's nice to see a splash of color on a premium streaming app, as the majority of them tend to use dark themes, heavy on black and gray.
I like the layout of the app. Stan has opted for a sleek and less distracting way to separate its content. With a simple hamburger dropdown menu at the top, simply click on the menu to toggle to a new category (shows, movies, etc.). When you're not using the menu, it goes away, allowing for a fuller experience of the app when you browse and explore content.
That being said, although the layout and design are good, the app is not always reliable. It often crashes and you cannot minimize videos so that you can continue watching content while doing other things on your phone (answering texts, messages, etc.). Additionally, the swiping between shows function is not as smooth or natural as it could be. It's easy to forget sometimes that app design is not only about looks. The functionality is important too. Sadly, Stan isn't the best-functioning streaming app there is.
Content
You can't argue with the shows and movies that Stan has to offer. It has plenty of fan favorites, cult classics, and hit shows and movies to watch. Plus, Stan original programming such as No Activity, Plonk, Wolf Creek, Romper Stomper, Bloom, The Other Guy, The Gloaming, and The Commons help set it apart from the competition.
If you're looking for high-quality content, then Stan is a great choice.
Pricing and Plans
There are a few different plans Stan TV offers depending on your needs. Here's a quick breakdown of what they are:
The plan you choose depends on the streaming quality you want, the number of simultaneous streams you require, and how many offline devices you want.
-Stan offers three monthly streaming packages: the Basic package at $10/month for standard definition streaming and one simultaneous stream, the Standard package at $14/month for HD streaming with three simultaneous streams, and the Premium package at $17/month for 4K streaming with four simultaneous streams and five download devices.
So, the short story is that if you want to make the most of the Stan TV app, you will have to pay a pretty penny.
Suggestions that I have for Stan TV App
If Stan really wants to become a major competitor for Netflix, they'll need to offer more for their $10/month subscription tier. The resolution is fine (I guess?), but where my problem lies is in only one simultaneous stream for that price. I think at least two would give Stand more of a competitive edge in the space. They'll also have to, once and for all, fix all of those pesky bugs and crashing issues on the app.
