Many of us live in a world where there are many options for things that are expensive. Cheap alternatives to expensive items abound, and the same basic rules apply to streaming services as they do to other products and services. Some streaming services offer on-demand content while others feature live television. Whichever option you choose, make sure it gets the job done and that the alternatives available to you meet your needs.
YouTube TV is a new video streaming service that is trying to hold its own against premium streaming services. With 70 channels, YouTube TV offers a simplified TV viewing experience.
But does it? The cost of the service keeps going up each year, and it's cheaper than most live TV or cable options, but is it comprehensive? These are some of the questions we face when deciding whether or not to subscribe to the service.
Most of us end up searching ?Is YouTube TV worth it?? and ?Should I spend my money on YouTube TV? because we're reluctant to spend our money on an untested product or service, and that's when we tend to rely on others' opinions. Every time we search for a YouTube TV-related query, we find one particular community popping up in search results every time, and that's r/youtubetv.
Today we're reviewing r/youtubetv as a community. Can you trust it? Can you count on it? Can it help you make an informed decision?
My recent experience on r/youtubetv
I recently checked this subreddit and there were two posts that I had upvoted. The first was about a 30-day trial extension for YouTube TV, which got over 50 upvotes. The second was about Viacom's cable networks being added to YouTube TV this summer, which got more than 330 upvotes. These are both good news for users who are spending more than $40/month on a comprehensive streaming experience.
About r/youtubetv - Community & Members
The community has a membership of 39,500 people out of which 370-600 people are online at any given time. This subreddit was created on February 28, 2017, and it has grown tremendously in the past couple of years. It's getting a lot of traction in recent times and it has one of the best members to engagement ratios I've seen in a while.

Moderators of r/youtubetv
One of the least impressive aspects of this website is that it has a single moderator - ?7thton?. And if you read my reviews, you?d know that I?m not a big fan of having just one person moderating a group of over 35,000 members. I?d be much happier if there were at least 3 or 4 people to oversee all the activities on the page and to respond to feedback in order to make sure improvements are made. I don't know if a single person can manage to do all that on their own.
Why should you follow r/youtubetv?
I wouldn't recommend r/youtubetv over any other major reviewing outlet because they don't always give the full story. This community breaths youtube tv and so they know all the ins and outs of the platform, so by gauging their opinions you'll know the truth. Additionally, you'll find a diverse range of content including news, technical questions, general questions, and some information on other topics related to Roku, Nvidia Shield, and Android Box.
Community Engagement
I commend the members of this community for their engagement rate. First of all, for a community of 35,000+ that has only 1% of its members active at any given time, that's amazing. Recently, I reviewed half a dozen services with more than 80,000 members but not a single one of them had an engagement rate of more than 0.2%. So, in terms of community engagement, r/youtubetv is a live wire. For instance, a simple query about notification bannersâcan they be made to go away faster?âattracted more than 5 comments within a few hours.
Browsing and Navigation
Though a considerable amount of people are active simultaneously, the sub isn't yet that mainstream. So, 300-500 or even 1500-2000 members aren't going to affect your browsing or streaming experience. I was on this sub for over 20 minutes and didn't face any discrepancies at all throughout the testing. Moving across different sections was seamless, sorting the content was easy, and overall this sub offered hassle-free navigation.
Reddit Gold
The engagement rate on this platform is commendable, as well as the gold distribution. I found 3-4 top posts that received gold for the title. In the comments, I was able to find 6-7 golds awarded to the contributors. This allocation ratio is much better than r/badMovies or any of the recently reviewed subreddits. Keep in mind, that this sub has a small following, and even after that, there's still a considerable amount of gold out there.
Related Subreddits
I love it when communities make it easy for users to find quality content. In the sidebar of r/youtubetv, you'll find a related subreddit section, where you'll find subreddits that are similar to YouTube TV. In this section, you'll find five subs - r/cordcutters, r/YouTubeMusic, r/bestofhulu, r/Hulu, and r/PhiloTV.
Filter by flair
If related subreddits make me happy, then I filter by flair on r/youtubetv to see what?s new and interesting. It?s a sign that the community is active and the mods are doing their best to ensure that people can find what they are looking for within a single click. On r/youtubev, you will find six filter by flair options: ?News?, ?Technical Questions?, ?General Question?, ?Nvidia Shield?, ?Android Box?, and ?Roku?.
