I just want to say that Reddit might just be the most generally useful website on the internet. That's all I have to say. Let's all go home now, Reddit has won the internet.
It seems like maybe that's going a bit far- but it's true that Reddit is loaded with information, riveting discussion, and an interesting social media dynamic. It's great to skim through the slush of the entire internet and only bring forth the best of the best in terms of content. Sure, Reddit may have developed a bit of a bad reputation over the years as a cesspool of angsty edge lords and borderline incels, but there's no denying the fact that, at least in theory, Reddit is an incredible idea.
Reddit is a great resource for information and discussion about specialized interests. No matter how bizarre, esoteric, or fringe your fandom, Reddit almost certainly has a thread for it. Thanks to a byzantine matrix of millions of different subreddits, there is a home for everyone here. Although the size of the communities will vary (rather greatly), even a small community can thrive with highly active users.
If you're not interested in specific genres of music, Reddit has many bustling subreddits for you to explore. For instance, if you like to make hip-hop music, head over to r/makinghiphop for a constantly updated source of tools, tips, and discussions. Or if you're more interested in mainstream hip-hop, head over to r/hiphopheads. There, you'll find an even larger community of rap fans who can help guide and support your creativity. Like many things in life, Reddit is what you make it.
Reddit is popular for its democratic voting system. This system encourages the posting of the best content, as users are rewarded with upvotes and sometimes special awards.
When someone posts something that is false, misleading, hateful, or just downright stupid, the post can be downvoted to oblivion. In extreme cases, the post can be removed, and the user can be banned from a subreddit at the discretion of the community's moderators. This system makes browsing the internet so much more pleasant because only the most favored content is left on Reddit.
If you're looking for a great community for TV lovers, then I would recommend checking out r/Television. With over 16 million members and thousands of active participants online at any given time, this subreddit is always updating with the latest news and reviews. If you're looking for a place to get your TV news fix, r/Television may be the perfect place for you.
History
Reddit started as a couple of friends from college built it in 2005. Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian impressed Paul Graham so much after hearing him speak at the University of Virginia that he invited them to apply for his incubator, which they did.
Their first idea, though, couldn't compare to Reddit. It was a service called My Mobile Menu, which would allow users to order food via SMS messaging. This, understandably, proved unsuccessful. After a few more brainstorming sessions, however, Graham pitched an idea to the duo for what he called "the front page of the internet." And with a very generous initial round of fundraising (provided by Y Combinator), Huffman and Ohanian got to work on what would one day be the online behemoth known as Reddit. The official site launch took place in June of 2005.
In October of 2016, Reddit CEO Steve Huffman and CTO Alexis Ohanian sold the site to the Conde Nast Media Group for a reported sum of money between $10 million and $20 million. Prior to this sale, Reddit was not as profitable as it is today. In 2009, ad space was introduced on the site and from there Reddit began to grow quickly. Today, Reddit is estimated to be worth over 1.8 billion dollars.
Design
I have to admit that when I first started using the site (a few years ago), the design was a little tricky for me to get used to. I think that it is fair to say that Reddit may not have the most immediately intuitive interface of any site on the web. This is partially due to, in my opinion, the fact that Reddit, conceptually speaking, was so new and unique. The notion of subreddits was still foreign to me. That being said, though, I stuck it out, and nowadays I find Reddit to be one of the most logically designed online communities.
When visiting Reddit, you will see a few icons on the home page. The icons are cryptic and will be your most useful tools when browsing this website. Reddit offers three ways to view its posts: large cards show full images, classic mode works if you want to click into a post to see what's inside, and compact mode gives the site a more traditional message board look.
And to sort content on Reddit, simply choose between having content appear in descending order by the "best" posts, hot posts, new, top, and riding. Once you have figured out how to make the most of Reddit's toolbox, the site really opens up and the possibilities become nearly endless. And there you have it you now know how to effectively use one of the most powerful sites on the internet. Now feel free to dive in and join whatever communities tickle your fancy!
Content
If you're looking for up-to-date information on television shows, then r/Television is the place to be. The posts here will be based on what users are interested in at the moment, so you'll always be able to find something new. However, there is a large archive of past posts if you want to explore something else.
Many of the posts on this subreddit are about TV news, announcements, reviews, awards shows, castings, cancellations, and more. Another option is to post about what's on your mind and see what conversation arises from there!
Desktop and Mobile Experience
I have found that the best way to enjoy Reddit is by using their mobile app. After all, Reddit's app is very well designed and users can voice their concerns on specific subreddits. If you dont like the official app, there are several alternate apps that allow you to browse reddit too. Try Alien Blue, Nano, Beam, or Glance for some different options.
But I could easily scroll the Reddit app for hours. Again, it may take some getting used to, but once you get past that initial (and short-lived) learning curve, you will be blessed with a never-ending social media feed that is free from all of the annoying contrivances of people's egos getting in the way of content, seeing as Reddit is somewhat anonymous.
Pricing and Plans
Reddit is a great site because it is 100% free to use. However, if you want an enhanced experience, you can purchase Reddit Premium for $5.99/month. This subscription offers ad-free browsing and 700 coins each month to award other users.
