reddit.com/r/MovieSuggestions
Thousands of movies are released each year; some achieve financial and commercial success, whereas others not so much. From an audience's perspective, every movie cannot fulfill the demand for each viewer. Each person has a different taste when it comes to cinema, and that translates into the success of a particular title or franchise.
Many of us are not a big fan of Dwayne Johnson movies - they make us feel dumb. However, we can't generalize it as for the masses, that form of content seems to be working. And that's the reason why the movies are so successful at the box office.
Today, we're going to review a subreddit called r/MovieSuggestions. This is one of the established movie-related communities on Reddit, and as a viewer you don't need to connect with everyone but just a few who are keen on helping you out. This is the place where you'll meet like-minded individuals as far as content is concerned.
My recent experience on r/MovieSuggestions
My recent experience on this subreddit was looking at a post that was updated 6 hours ago. A user posted a query asking fellow members suggestions regarding Korean/Japanese crime, mystery, thriller, slow burn, or suspense movies. He mentioned that he had already seen movies such as ?Mother,'?Oldboy,'?Memoir of a Murderer,'?I Saw the Devil,'?The Wailing,'?The Man From Nowhere,' and ?Parasite.? This post garnered 74 upvotes and over 35 comments within a few hours.
About r/MovieSuggestions - Community & Members
The r/MovieSuggestions community is an amazing resource for movie lovers! You can share your experience, ask for suggestions, recommend movies, and interact with fellow community members. The community has 165,000 members, but 300-500 of them are online at any given time. This subreddit was created on August 14, 2011, and has been stagnant in recent times. It's slightly smaller than r/TrueFilm and significantly smaller than r/MovieDetails, but those subreddits cater to a different audience, so I don't feel that this community should be judged on the basis of its membership.
How to access r/MovieSuggestions?
If you're not already a Reddit user, you can sign up for an account here. Once you have an account, you can follow subreddits, comment on posts, and even post anything on any of the subreddits.
Moderators of r/MovieSuggestions
Even though our community is only 165,000 members, we still consider it to be a big one. With more than 10,000 active members every day, it's important that the community follows the guidelines set by our five moderators- ?hammsandwich,? ?Jokiesamoster,? ?Tevesh_CKP,? ?gonzoforpresident,? and ?AssistantBOT.?
Why should you follow r/MovieSuggestions?
Some interesting content rules that I like on the page include: Suggesting a Single Film, Including the Films Title in the post, Don't review a film in detail, Provide just one suggestion every 24 hours, Don't repeat a suggestion which has been used in the last three months. Such strict guidelines only elevate this subreddits position in my view.
Community Engagement
Although r/MovieSuggestions is not the most active community, it does get a considerable amount of new posts each day. There is a considerable amount of interaction on each of these posts, with an engagement rate that is below some other popular subreddits. When you are posting content, do not expect more than 20 people to respond to your posts. And that is usually when you are lucky. Otherwise, 5-10 comments on a single post is about the average engagement rate for r/MovieSuggestions.
Browsing & Navigation
Since there aren't many people using this subreddit at the same time, the browsing and navigation experience is smooth. I'm disappointed with the overall design approach - the logo and the cover - but I don't have much to complain about because I don't spend a lot of time on this subreddit. One positive aspect of this subreddit is that it doesn't have rich media content, so you can browse efficiently even on a data connection.
Similar subreddits
I like it when subreddits go out of their way to improve the browsing experience on r/MovieSuggestions. In the sidebar, you'll find a ?Similar Subreddits? section where you'll find a plethora of similar subreddits such as ?Animesuggest,? ?AustralianFilm,? ?CanadianFilm,? ?Documentaries,? ?Flicks,? ?Ifyoulikeblank,? ?IrishFilm,? ?kdramacommends,? ?KoreanFilms,? ?IgbTV,? ?"movieclub," ?"Muricanized," "NewJerseyFilm," "NewZealandFilm," and "NotintheMovie?"
Filter by flair
Last, since the content on r/MovieSuggestions isn't diverse, you'll find three options via Filter by Flair - Announcement, Suggesting, and Requesting. Though these are many, they cover the essence of the page, and there's nothing more I'd demand from the mods or the community. A suggestion page should strictly be about those three things, and thus I don't have anything to complain about.
Important rules you must know before joining r/MovieSuggestions?
As a movie lover, you might be eager to join the r/MovieSuggestions community. But as we learned above, the community is strict in regard to the content you post. Therefore, make sure that whatever you're posting follows the community guidelines. For that reason, below is a list of important r/MovieSuggestions rules that you need to know:
and have a blast.
Make sure to have a great time together and achieve excellence.
before watching the movie.
Be mindful of spoilers before watching the movie.
.
Don't be rude, harass someone, or ignore the subreddit rules- this might lead to banning.
.
There is a zero tolerance policy against piracy on the subreddit, so make sure you don't share any pirated content.
Please tag your submissions properly via the filter and make them as brief as possible.
.
Don't provide more than a list of 25 entries unless the person asking for help specifically requests it.
You can only link posts to sources that are credible, such as Letterboxd, IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, or Wikipedia.
Design
I think the design on this page is pretty bad. I don't like it when the mods and community don't put effort into making their subreddit stand out. The default Reddit logo on r/MovieSuggestions looks a lot like r/entertainment and other subreddits. It's disappointing to see that a subreddit with so much popularity can't take the time to add a quality group image and a cover photo.

Here's a recommendation for you: if you like the neon visuals of Blade Runner, check out Ridley Scott's yakuza crime flick Black Rain. He shot Osaka like it was Los Angeles in November 2019 - 407 upvotes.
Conclusion
Movies have become more than just a form of entertainment. Watching movies is a way to connect with the story and see ourselves in characters. We expect every frame of a movie to be well-thought out and tell an amazing story, even if it receives critical appraise. So, it's hard to distinguish between what's likable and what's not. Ultimately, whether it's r/MovieSuggestions or any other platform, the quality of a film is wholly contingent upon your personal interpretation of the art.
