These streaming apps and networks though free are a great way to stay entertained. They have an easy to use interface and look great with their eye-catching designs. Today we're going to review one such app which has become very popular in recent times, it's known as Popcornflix. This app allows you to watch TV shows, movies, local files on a variety of devices.
What is Popcornflix?
Popcornflix is a free streaming platform that lets you watch movies and TV shows in standard definition. You don't need to make an account to use this platform. Whether you use the website or the app, you can stream content without giving away any personal information. In this review, we're specifically talking about the app, so everything below will be app-related.
What should you expect from the Popcornflix App?
Popcornflix is available on numerous devices. First, you can download it on your Android or iOS mobile phones. Other than that, you can find the app on Amazon Fire TV, Xbox 360, Roku, BlackBerry, Samsung, and gaming consoles such as Xbox 360 and Xbox One. The Popcornflix app supports Chromecast so if you're interested in watching content on your Smart TV, you can do so immediately.
Great in-app experience
Before writing this review, I wanted to check out each version of Popcornflix created for different platforms. I have to say that their app was the best in comparison to the web app and website. The interface was elegant and the ad placement wasn't obtrusive. Furthermore, content discovery on the app is amazing thanks to the search bar and numerous filter options to narrow down the content bucket. The most standout aspect was the hidden menu at the top of the screen which allowed the hero section and body section of the app to stand out more.

Popcornflix is incredibly popular with all demographics because of its wide variety of content. You'll find a range of genres, such as comedy, action, thriller, family, drama, mystery, old school classics, stand-up comedy and documentaries. Movies have been divided based on these genres, so you don't have to sort out content to find the ideal title. If you're just in for the latest films, make sure to check out the New Arrivals section.
Unique Video Player
I was attracted to Popcornflix because of its unique video player. Its player allows you to make GIFs from a video, and you can add comments to specific parts of the video - similar to the ones on SoundCloud. These comments are a great way to gauge other viewer's opinions about certain scenes, dialogues, and overall screenplay. However, you will need to create an account in order to try these features.
Lacks certain Features
Unlike other free streaming platforms that allow users to toggle subtitle options, Popcornflix has completely missed out on this feature. The only toggle options you?ll find are volume control, full-screen button, and video movement. While I?m slightly disappointed with the lack of subtitle option, I can still appreciate the ?Theater Mode? after the full-screen which allows me to immerse myself in the video.
Multiple Apps
Do you know that Popcornflix offers multiple apps? There's a regular app for adults and then there's an app for kids. That's quite a thoughtful gesture from the developers. Though Popcornflix Kids just has kid movies, it does allow parents to breathe easily without worrying about the content on the regular app. The user interface and design on both the apps are quite similar and thus even if you were to just accompany your kids for an animated movie, you won't have difficulty in operating the app.

The Popcornflix app has been installed over one million times and is one of the most popular content streaming apps on Android. It is lightweight, running on a 4.53.0 version, and is updated every month. If you have Android KitKat or an OS that was released after that, you should have no trouble streaming content on this app.

You can even install the app directly on your device other than your phone by using Bluestacks or VirtualBox.

This app has an intuitive and simple interface. The hidden menu provides an extended breathing space which makes navigating even better. The content is well organized based on genres on recommendation and the thumbnails stand out because of the dark theme.

The header section has a drop-down menu on the left, logo at the center, and Chromecast/search bar towards the right. Under the header section, you can switch between two tabs - Movies and TV Shows. If you click on movies, the thumbnails will feature all kinds of movie-related information such as cast lists, plot summaries, and more. Under the main banner, you'll find sections such as ?New Arrivals?, ?Most Popular?, and other genre-based content diversification. Finally, there is a search bar that allows you to quickly and easily find whatever you're looking for.

If you hover your mouse over the ?Play More? button, you?ll see the list of shows with their corresponding trailers.
If you click on any title on the homepage, you'll be redirected to the inner page. I love how simple yet effective this page is. On the homepage, there's a small banner followed by the title, genre, and "Play More" button. Under that, you have a short synopsis followed by information related to cast and crew. For each show, there's information about its cast and crew right below the video clip previews. If you hover your mouse over the "Play More" button, you'll see a list of shows with their corresponding trailers.
Content
Look, when it comes to streaming content, you can't set your expectations high on a free streaming platform. If you do, you'll be disappointed. Popcornflix is nowhere near the streaming quality or content capabilities offered by Netflix and Prime Video, however, it's free. Thus, we have to compromise a little in these areas. There is a decent content library covering a wide range of genres but don't expect anything extravagant. One thing I can say for sure is that this app does have something for everyone. You'd even find animated content for adults that dates back to the 90s on Popcornflix.
Desktop/Mobile experience
Popcornflix generally works well on most compatible platforms, but I want to let you know that you won't get high definition or ultra HD clarity from this app. Sure, it's way better than the pixilated web app version, but it's not anything extraordinary. Other than that, if you stream on Roku, you can stream conveniently on standard definition.
There are ads on the app that make it difficult to enjoy the streaming experience. You would have to watch 15-20 second ads before every stream. It's not the ads that bother me, but the number of ads that make you want to bounce off and uninstall the app right away. But if you want to watch the content, that's the trade-off.
Even on the Pixel 3, I faced certain buffering and loading issues. The videos didn't even play at times and would stop and buffer for several minutes before getting back on track. At 32MBPs, I don't consider my internet to be a stumbling block, but if you're streaming, expect issues like these.
Suggestions I have for Popcornflix
If Popcornflix wants to compete with the corporation-backed apps like Crackle, it really needs to up its game. At least, the streaming quality needs massive improvement. I would urge the developers to do justice to the amazing interface by backing it up with impressive streaming capabilities.
Conclusion
Overall, I think Popcornflix is a pretty good streaming app. It has a lot of great titles and decent streaming quality. Plus, it's very compatible with devices. So, if you'redone with Crackle and are looking for an alternative, I'd recommend trying Popcornflix. However,I'm not sure whether this app will satisfy your streaming desires, but there's no harm in trying it out.
