The television industry struggled mightily to keep up with the changing tides of the internet, with computer screens eventually overtaking televisions as the primary source of entertainment for many people.
Some companies, such as Netflix, were eager to position themselves at the forefront of the streaming revolution. They wasted no time making the switch from providing DVD rentals through the postal service to propping themselves up as the company whose name is synonymous with streaming itself. Whether planning to watch Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video, people often simply use "Netflix" as the convenient shorthand for streaming TV or movies - best reflected in the salacious phrase "Netflix and chill?"
In 2020, many traditional cable networks have adapted to the times by embedding live and on-demand TV streaming right onto their websites. Some have gone so far as to create their own premium streaming platforms in order to compete with Netflix. HBO is a prime example of a traditional network that was quick to bridge the gap between TV and the internet.
Disney Plus, NBC's premium streaming service, just launched earlier this month.
Honestly, if any traditional TV network deserves its own streaming platform, it would have to be NBC. They've been pumping out quality television for nearly 100 years now and they're one of the few channels that I do brush the dust off the old TV every once in a while. There are very few shows that I feel compelled to watch live as they air, and NBC broadcasts several of them.
Peacock is much more than just NBC?s original content. It offers thousands of hours of syndicated movies and TV shows, which makes it a viable alternative to Netflix or Hulu. In fact, I wouldn?t be surprised if Peacock didn?t run away with a sizeable portion of Netflix?s viewership - if only because The Office will soon be available exclusively on Peacock starting January 1st, 2021 (when the show gets pulled from its longtime home of Netflix).
In addition to all of your favorite NBC original shows, as well as hundreds of syndicated TV series and classic movies, Peacock offers a truly unique blend of content - including live sports events, a daily dose of news (from NBC, CNBC, MSNBC, and E! News), and new original Peacock exclusive series. As far as content is concerned (both in terms of quality and quantity), Peacock is starting to look quite appealing, doesn't it?
I'm going to review Peacock, which is a new streaming service that's growing in popularity. There are a lot of things to cover, so let's start with what they're offers. They have movies, TV shows, and music, so you can watch whatever you like. The cost per month is $8.99, but if you sign up for a year it's only $59.99. I think it's worth checking out, so give it a try!
Design
I really like Peacock's sleek, modern design. It's slick and it's pretty intuitive. I love the way it looks--in fact, I would go as far as to say that it is the best-looking premium streaming service out there right now. It looks something like I expected Apple TV to look--with its very clean lines and app-like navigation style (browse the sections of the service by clicking one of 9 tabs at the top of the page: Channels, Browse, Featured, TV Shows, Movies, Kids, News, Sports, or Latino).
I think the usability of Peacock's content is a bit lacking. There is no 'skip' or 'next episode' button, which makes binging your favorite comfort shows more annoying than it should be. You have to go through the trouble of returning to the episode list (which is also not conveniently accessible while watching content) every time you want to jump ahead in a series.
In short, I would say that Peacock looks great, but this comes at the expense of usability.
Content and Features
Peacock makes up for its usability shortcomings by providing high-quality content, as well as a wide variety of NBC shows. Starting next year, Peacock will be the only streaming service where you will be able to watch America's two favorite comedies: The Office and Parks and Rec. Additionally, Peacock has every other NBC show you can think of.
I see that Peacock offers a lot of content, including movies, news, original shows, and live sporting events. I think it's more important to think about the future when deciding whether or not to sign up for Peacock. Most of the NBC shows that are on Peacock (and some of the movies) are available on other streaming services right now. So I think Peacock will really fan its feathers next year when many of those shows won't be available anywhere else.
Mobile and Desktop Experience
This app needs to work out some issues. Again, it looks nice, but the functionality is not great. There is no mini-screen streaming, for instance, that allows you to continue watching content while you browse for something else. There are also many reviews on the App Store that claim the live streaming quality is not great.
My biggest complaint about the service is its device limitations. It is not available on Roku or Firestick, and it doesn't look like there are any plans in the works for either of these platforms to welcome Peacock soon. However, if you use a Vizio or LG smart TV, Android TV, Xbox One, or Chromecast, you can enjoy Peacock to its fullest potential.
Pricing and Plans
Peacock is a streaming service that advertises its ability to stream content for free with no credit card required. However, the free version of Peacock only includes limited content. If you want the full Peacock experience, you will need to pay $4.99/month for the Premium Plus subscription option, which removes ads.
In other words, the service does not offer monthly payments, but it does not charge extra for using the live sports streaming.
Suggestions that I have for Peacock
Honestly, I think Peacock should do more usability and functionality tests. Maybe even conduct a few more focus groups to really nail down what people want from their streaming service. It's hard to like Peacock no matter how hard I try, but I'm hoping that in the coming months they can improve some of the shortcomings when it comes to usability.
Peacock really needs to work on its accessibility issue. Frankly, they should have had this already taken care of long before they launched. The fact that I can't stream Peacock on my Roku TV is unacceptable.
