mlb.com
When it comes to cord-cutting, replacing sports is a huge pain. Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu all provide a ton of entertainment, but they don't focus on sports exclusively. Fubo TV is one particular service that offers sports content, but unfortunately you can't access the most popular leagues in the US with FuboTV.
Among the many prestigious leagues, MLB.TV is considered to have the best league package. MLB Advanced Media, the company that manages this network provides service to networking giants such as HBO. MLB.TV has a lot of hype surrounding it, and for good reason: it delivers on its promises. Today, we'll try and uncover this baseball streaming network.
MLB.tv not to be confused with MLB.com
Though MLB.com has a comprehensive approach, MLB.tv is purely focused on providing coverage. It provides highlights, audio and video streaming, along with merchandise, tickets, game information, fantasy leagues, and baseball memorabilia. Thus, the .com extension is considered the parent domain of the .tv domain.
History
MLB.tv is a subscription-based audio video service provided by MLB Advanced Media. They have two different types of services based on tiers; each of which allows users to watch and listen to quality baseball content using their internet connection.
The MLB.tv subscription is straightforward and as mentioned earlier, it has two tiers - MLB.tv All Teams and MLB.tv Single team.
If you're looking to get all the features that NBA 2K18 has to offer, you'll want to choose the first package. This will give you access to all the teams and stats, as well as in-game highlights and DVR controls. If you only want access to one team, then the single team option is for you.
Design
I absolutely love MLB.TV website! The layout is creative and user-friendly, with a fun blue and orange color scheme that makes the site look great. It's easy to navigate, with lots of handy features and Helpful Guides on the homepage. I have a single team pass, since I'm a Cardinals fan, but there are plenty of other teams and games to watch. Thanks MLB.TV!
All of the menus are easy to navigate and have been well organised.
My first impression of the website was that it had a beautiful header which blended well with the sub-menus. There was a search bar on the right hand, and under that you had 14 menus - 9 on the left and 5 on the right. All of the menus were easy to navigate and had been well organised.
The News, Scoreboard, Stats, Schedule, Roster, Community, Fans and Busch Stadium sections are on the left whereas Tickets, Mobile, Fantasy, Shop and Teams are on the right. The detail that has been put into this website is really impressive.
There's a small video player on the left of the screen and there are detailed player data on the right. You can check out stats and any other information regarding a player using the Search by Roster option on the right. In the center, you'll find images of any player you choose and you'll get the entire dataset including Playing Status, Full Name, Birthdate, Bats/Throws, HT, WT, Bio, Debut and College. Thus, you can potentially dig deep and find anything you want to know about the players in your team.
If you scroll down, you can find news stories, fantasy news, and an image gallery for that particular player. What I like about this network is that it provides the same in-depth coverage in its app as well. You can find an app on the iOS or Android store and sign-in within a minute.
The website is responsive and pretty quick on the phone, too. The drop-down menus are on point and don't obstruct the browsing experience on the phone regardless of your display size. My experience on Pixel 3a was pretty decent. Though not as great as the desktop, it was quite close.
I want to tell you about how great the sign-up procedure on this network is. Just give your email address and one of the payment methods, and you're done! What's interesting is that you don't even have to create an account, and you can subscribe as a guest too.
Content
MLB.TV is a channel that is only focused on Major League Baseball and that's all you're going to get on this network. If you're from Europe and don't know a lot about baseball, consider this to be one of your nation's top leagues, per se England's English Premier League, having its own channel devoted to the league.
The only thing I don't like about this channel is that there's a blackout for local games. Local TV stations have broadcasting rights and so you won't be able to watch the game until it finishes. It's only after 90 minutes that you'll be able to stream it to the device. And that's quite late when you compare it with how the real-time internet works. It's beyond annoying, it's infuriating. If you suffer from the same issue, I'd advise you to change your location via VPN, so you can stream in real-time without having to wait.
In the event that a game is postponed, it will not be shown on MLB.TV.
MLB.TV does not feature every regular game, with two exceptions. If a game is postponed, it will not be shown on MLB.TV.
2. Whenever your home team is playing, you won't be able to watch them on national broadcast or in fixtures that are owned by cable networks in your area. This means that the local market will always be blacked out throughout the season.
Some baseball fans use alternatives to buying MLB.tv packages in order to watch as many matches as possible and especially of the team they love most.
Though the app doesn't fulfill my other needs for a VPN, I do like that it has Advanced Audio. Having the freedom to listen to the radio while watching the live broadcast represents classic baseball culture in a way that a VPN can't.
Despite being defeated, the TV networks are still causing problems because they sometimes take a little too long to broadcast the matches. If you don't let all of these frustrations get to you, there are other benefits such as being able to watch highlights of past matches.
Desktop/Mobile experience
Despite not being entirely satisfied with the network's streaming quality, I would have to give credit where credit is due and that's because the streaming quality at 16Mbps was fine on the website. Compared to 32Mbps (which I use generally), I didn't have any discrepancies when streaming on the network. The quality fluctuated a little, but there was no buffering or choppiness throughout the stream.
This website works better with Ethernet cable as compared to the Wi-Fi network. I would totally try it out. I connected my Xbox and the streaming quality along with the stability was impressive.
Compatibility
One of the many positive aspects of this platform is that it is highly compatible. Users can easily stream at 60 frames per second and can stream from any device. Based upon your internet speed, you can adjust between the SD and HD quality streams. By default, MLB.tv advises users to have at least 3Mbps speed for a smooth experience.
Here is a list of devices which are compatible with MLB.tv.
I think you might have access to one of these devices. Thus, accessing MLB.tv isn't much of a challenge for you.
Plans & Pricing
There are multiple ways to access MLB.TV. For example, the postseason package is priced at $24.99 which allows users to access all the games from previous seasons as well as live streaming of certain events such as spring training games.
If you want to have complete access to all the teams, you can either pay $118.99 per year or spend $24.99 on a monthly basis. If you only want to follow one team like me, you have to spend $91.99. However, I'm thinking about changing my plan and having access to all teams at a lower price difference. In addition, the prices have gone up since the last year, but they're still within limits.
Suggestions I have for MLB.TV
Though I understand that breaking broadcast rights deals is complex, I think MLB.tv should work on real-time streaming for subscribers. Seriously, if you're paying the money, you won't compromise on the broadcast under any circumstances.
Conclusion
I think the hype around MLB.TV is real. It's a great initiative with smooth streaming and great compatibility. If you're into baseball, I don't see any reason why you shouldn't enjoy this service.
