kijk.nl
The word "Kijk" is a Dutch word that roughly translates into English as "look?" or "Watch." Kijk, then, being one of the most popular TV networks of the Netherlands, is certainly aptly named. In addition to being an extremely popular and beloved TV network, Kijk is also a free TV streaming site or a TV "catchup" streaming service, as it is sometimes called. If you live in the Netherlands, this is definitely a TV streaming site that you need to know about. It is, in fact, one of the best free TV streaming sites in the whole world.
Design
Kijk has a sleek and professional look and feel. I would put it right up there with any of the best TV streaming sites from a design standpoint. The site is smooth, user-friendly, intuitive, very easy to navigate, and well organized. If you appreciate top of the line site design, Kijk will definitely not disappoint.
Beneath this, there are five smaller boxes, each of which houses a series episode. If you're looking for something specific, such as a movie or specific episode of a show, head to the bottom of the page and click on the "show more" link next to any given title.
Kijk should immediately feel familiar to anyone who has used Netflix or Hulu before. It has employed a very similar layout (what has now become something of a design default when it comes to streaming services). At the top of the page, for instance, you will find a featured series. This asserts itself as a very large-sized banner containing a cover image and brief summary of the show, which spans the entire top of the page, from margin to margin. Beneath this, there are five smaller boxes, each of which houses an episode. If you're looking for something specific such as a movie or specific episode of a show, head to the bottom of the page and click on the "show more" link next to any given title.
Below that, the site alternates between featured categories and more recommended content. The featured categories appear as a slim side-scrolling library of options, while the more recommended content is presented in a list at the bottom of the screen. First, click through to find a selection of the most popular titles on Kijk. Below that, with the same side-scrolling capabilities, browse the site by channels if you prefer. Keep scrolling down the page, though, to find some of the programs that you have missed and another prominently featured show.
Although the design of this site is not particularly innovative or visually appealing, it is very effective and many streaming sites use it. The site continues to be effective even after you click to view a movie or TV show. The media player takes over the entire top portion of the page, below which you will still be able to browse additional titles.
If you find this to be a distraction, however, and you are not in full-screen mode, no worries ? you can always collapse the media player portion of the page, unfolding more information on the TV show or movie you are viewing. Or, of course, just commit to the full-screen version of the player for completely undisturbed viewing. Personally, I love how streamlined the viewing and browsing processes become on this free TV streaming site. This is a great example of a free TV streaming site offering a smooth and intuitive user experience.
Content and Features
Kijk stands out from other catch-up TV streaming services in the number of features it provides its users. Of the many free TV streaming sites I've reviewed, very few appear to place much emphasis on the value of offering interactive and customizable features. As a result, Kijk's experience is more enduring and less ephemeral than that of most other sites.
This is great news! I'm happy to report that on Kijk you will be able to add shows and movies to your own personalized watch list. This is a surprisingly rare feature for a catchup TV streaming site, believe it or not. Most of them do not even allow their users to log in or create an account. Kijk, however, is more focused on providing an individualized experience for each and every one of its viewers.
Along with being able to curate your own watch list in order to keep track of titles that you want to watch in the future, Kijk also allows users to "like" TV show episodes and movies. This will automatically add them to their own list, which will result in a handy selection of your favorite TV shows, episodes, and more. By doing this, it makes it easy to re-watch content, but it also helps make sure that you don't forget what a movie or TV show is called (which can be endlessly frustrated when trying to recommend something to a friend).
If you're looking for a great source of Dutch content, then Kijk is definitely the site for you. The site has a huge library of shows and movies that you can stream for free, so there's never any reason to miss out.
Additionally, Kijk has a great deal of international content as well. With plenty of classic and contemporary American hit movies and TV series available, you'll never miss a beat with what's going on overseas. Here's a little taste of some of the American content that you can expect to stream on Kijk for free (at least as of the time of this review): the brand-new Christopher Nolan epic Tenet, Oscar award-winning La La Land, and classic comedies such as Home Alone and Coming to America.
The content offerings of Kijk are as diverse as they are high-quality, and I think that Kijk has what it takes to top the list of the best free TV streaming sites in the Netherlands for sure - maybe even the world.
That being said, it was unfortunate to learn that Kijk is only available if you are physically in the Netherlands. This is usually not the case with catchup free TV streaming sites. I mean, none of them that I know of let anyone access everything no matter where in the world they live, but most of them are at least willing to share a fraction of their TV shows and movies with international viewers. So, if you want to be able to enjoy one of the best free TV streaming sites in the Netherlands, but you are not in the Netherlands, you might have to figure out how to get a little creative with a good Virtual Private Network (VPN)? wink, wink.
Mobile and Desktop Experience
I couldn't find a mobile app version of Kijk when I looked. However, it is worth noting that I was searching for the mobile version of this Dutch streaming site from the US. I may not have been getting all of the results; the app stores vary content based on location. That being said, I would be very surprised if Kijk, a free TV streaming app as good as this one, didn't have an app of some form. If this is the case, though, it would be a great relief for an otherwise awesome streaming site.
No matter whether or not there is an official app, Kijk's mobile site works excellently. Everything is resized perfectly to fit a smaller screen, and the user experience is just as smooth and natural on my phone as it is on my laptop. So, even if there isn't an official app, at least the site will still work OK when accessed from your mobile browser of choice.
Suggestions that I have for Kijk
If there is no mobile app that needs to be created for this TV streaming service, that should be a top priority for them. In fact, they should be working on developing apps for several platforms, not just iOS and Android devices. Kijk should have apps for Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast, PlayStation, Xbox, and all of the other ways in which Dutch people would like to access your content.
Another option is to consider letting international viewers in on at least a taste of what's available to watch on Dutch TV. I get not wanting to give everything away for free, but, hey, how much could a couple of episodes here and there really hurt? Besides, what happens when a citizen of the Netherlands travels abroad and wants to watch Kijk? Is he just out of luck entirely? Just something to think about as you move forward with this exceptional free TV streaming site of yours.
