Google is a mammoth tech company that everyone uses on a daily basis. Whether you're looking for an answer to a question or just checking your email, there's no escaping Google.
Google has a big hand in shaping many aspects of our lives - from smartphones, to music, to movies, to social media, to TV, and even email. They do this by studying the Google algorithm and then making sure the content on their websites conforms to it. This is called "Search Engine Optimization" or "SEO," and it basically means people are changing their language in order to improve their ranking on Google's search results. If that's not power, what is?
I absolutely love Google Play! It's one of the most useful and convenient services out there. I can't imagine living without it. For example, if I want to watch a movie or TV show, I just go to Google Play and search for it. There are a ton of optionsavailable, and the quality is always top notch. Plus, Google Play also offers some of the best premium movie and TV streaming apps out there. So overall, this company that has affected every aspect of our lives has done an amazing job with its various platforms.
However, if you are looking for an app that has a vast selection of movies and TV shows to watch offline, then Google Play Movie, and TV is definitely worth checking out. Plus, the app is free to download and use!
How does the Google Play Movie and TV app compare to other top-rated streaming apps like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video? Well, first of all, note that if you're looking for a premium streaming app with a large library of titles to watch on demand, you might be better off looking elsewhere. However, if you're looking for an app that offers a large selection of movies and TV shows to watch offline, Google Play Movie & TV is definitely worth considering. Plus, it's free to download!
Google Play Movie and TV functions a little bit differently from other premium streaming apps in that you can only watch rental or purchase movies and shows on these services. This means that you can't access movies and shows automatically the way that you can with Hulu or Disney Plus, though you can pay a certain amount of money each month in order to have access to more titles.
I think the biggest downside to this app is that it costs money every time you want to watch a movie. But, on the other hand, maybe that's more your style. You might just want to watch a certain movie and not mind paying out of pocket each time. Google Play Movies and TV has one of the largest libraries of any streaming service out there.
But in terms of all of the other components that you have to take into account when evaluating a premium streaming app, Google Play Movies and TV definitely seems to tick every box. But as we'll elaborate more on each facet in a moment, let's talk a little bit about how Google Play Movies and TV was born, grew, and expanded into one of the best streaming services out there.
History
Google Play Movies and TV were fully available in over 100 countries by the end of 2013.
Google launched Google Movies in May of 2011, but it didn't get a rebranding under the Google Play umbrella until March 2012. The app was made available only in the United States at first, but it began to slowly roll out internationally a few months later. The app grew into Korea, Australia, Canada, France, the United Kingdom, and Spain in September 2012, and by October 2013 it was fully available in over 100 countries.
Design
I really like the way Google Play Movies and TV looks. It has a really nice sleek and professional look to it. It has equal parts minimalistic and flashy. That might sound paradoxical, but somehow this app has pulled it off. What I mean is that the design of the app itself is very sparse, with very clean lines - and overall classy look - but it is still crammed full of content? And not in a way that feels cluttered or overwhelming (the way that many other similar apps can feel when they have so much content to offer).
The app's Discover mode is helpful, smoothly allowing you to browse titles by genre. Simply click on your genre of choice from a scrollable selection of tags at the top. Then just scroll to your movie's content. Once you find a title that catches your eye, just click on it and check out the title's credit info, view a trailer, and view rental and purchase options. You can also "like" or "dislike" movies and shows, adding them to playlists, which is a very convenient and useful feature. This is also how Google Play Movies and TV will know what to recommend to you in the future.
Many premium streaming apps should take note of how user-friendly Google Play Movie and TV is, with its sleek and professional design, and the many useful features it offers. In terms of usability, this is the model app design for streaming services.
Content
Pretty much any movie or TV show can be found on Google Play Movies and TV, as long as the movie or show you are looking for is at least somewhat well known. I will say that, as a big fan of indie films, so long as I have been using the Google Play Movies and TV app, I have never had an issue with not being able to find a specific title. Of course, Google will have to have the rights to the movie or show in order to make it available, but even if this app does not happen to have a movie or show that you are looking for, it will often point you toward a site or streaming service that does.
According to Google, the majority of the content on this app is available to stream in HD. And as of December 2016, many of them can be viewed in 4K Ultra HD.
Devices
Google Play Movies and TV is available on a lot of devices. Obviously, you can use it on any Android device, but it's also available on Apple devices and most smart TVs. Unfortunately, I don't think Google Play Movies and TV is currently available on gaming consoles like Xbox or PlayStation.
Pricing and Plans
Many people are disappointed that Google Play Movies and TV does not have a monthly subscription option. Personally, I would rather pay a certain amount to Google per month in order to have a baseline library of movies and shows that I could stream at my convenience. However, Google Play Movies and TV do not have this feature.
Instead of having to pay right away, you can start browsing the Google Play Movies and TV app's library of thousands of titles for free. Once you find something that you want to watch, you'll have to pay to stream it. Some titles can be rented or purchased; others can only be rented; others still can only be bought outright. Purchases, of course, can also be downloaded and viewed offline on your device.
Suggestions that I have for Google Play Movies and TV App
I would like to see a baseline streaming service offered by Google Play Movies and TV that includes a sizeable library of movies and shows that are available without the individual rental or purchase price. I wouldn't mind at all paying a certain amount per month for something more like a Prime Video service, where I can rent or buy titles as well as stream select movies and shows on-demand.
