As one of the most influential television networks in history, it is hard to talk about anything related to the TV industry without mentioning Fox. With a nearly endless roster of shows under their belt - some of which, like Family Guy; The Simpsons; and The Masked Singer (just to name a few) have become cultural phenomena - Fox has had a major impact on the entertainment landscape.
Fox has become a very polarizing name in the media circuit. This, of course, has less to do with their entertainment programming and more to do with their news shows. While the Fox network as a whole, though, is synonymous with conservative viewpoints, thanks to pundit shows such as Fox and Friends. In fact, some have compared Fox to the unofficial news network of the Republican party in the United States, with President Trump frequently singing the network's praises and public figures like Ann Coulter often appearing on Fox News segments.
Regardless of your political beliefs, it is clear that Fox is much more than just a news outlet. In addition to broadcasting news and politics, the network has a hand in producing movies (20th Century Fox now 21st Century Fox), great television shows (as I mentioned earlier), and sports. This unifying factor makes them one of the most important elements in American culture.
Although Fox Sports is technically a news outlet, there isn't much political bias that can be harnessed when it comes to reporting on something like sports entertainment. Of course, there are political matters that sometimes bleed into sports (kneeling for the anthem, etc.), but as a whole, one's political affiliation usually has little to no bearing on one's ability to report on what team won a matchup.
Sports is one of those things that, for the most part, when it comes to journalism, can come close to being objectively fair. A team either wins or loses. Points are either scored or they are not. There isn't much room for opinion on these matters. So, even if you're a diehard left-winger who's also a sports fan, you might just be surprised to find that you can enjoy Fox Sports just as much as a full-fledged member of the GOP. If you were to ignore Fox Sports, you would be missing out on the majority of major NFL, NBA, NASCAR and WWE broadcasts - as many of them air exclusively on Fox Sports channels.
History
The Fox Sports brand name refers to a whole network of sports channels and programming around the world which are fully or partially owned by the estate of TV magnate, Rupert Murdoch. The majority of the Fox Sports networks are owned and maintained solely by the Fox Corporation, with a few exceptions: Australian operations are overseen by News Corp Australia, and the remaining international Fox Sports entities are owned by the Walt Disney Corporation. In addition to these, regional operations and Fox College Sports are managed by the Diamond Sports Group - a joint venture between Sinclair Broadcast Group and Entertainment Studios; Disney sold the rights to these to this pair on August 23rd, 2019.
Disney announced on December 14th, 2017 that it is acquiring 21st Century Fox for $52.4 billion. Included in this deal are the film studio, FX Networks, National Geographic, and its regional sports networks. The Fox Corporation (the remaining Fox networks) will remain an independent operation run by the Murdoch family.
Design
I really enjoy the neutral design of the Fox Sports site. It doesn't get in its own way, focusing on providing news about sports rather than trying to be flashy or masculine. I think a lot of sports websites can get a little full of themselves, offering too much in their designs rather than tending to be simple and elegant. Fox Sports is one example of a site that strikes the right balance by being simple but still offering plenty of information.
Generally speaking, I like my news sources to be more minimalist in nature. And that's precisely what Fox Sports has done with this site. When I go to a news source, I want to get straight to the information - no-frills, nothing fancy, just sports news. And furthermore, I want those news stories to be well-organized and easily accessible. And Fox Sports is just that. Everything is easy to find, the main stories of the day are prominently featured, and there is a solid blend of text, video, and images.
One of my favorite design aspects of Fox Sports is that their site menu bar is always present at the top of the page, no matter what you click into on the site. Here, Fox Sports allows you to browse by the league, and so you can find what you're looking for quickly and easily. Looking for a specific sport? Simply click on any one of the following to narrow down this massive site: NFL, MLB, NCAA Football, NASCAR, Boxing, Soccer, NBA, or NCAA Basketball. Plus each league comes with its own comprehensive and useful dropdown menu for further specification (browse by the team, stats, players, etc.). I haven't been to a sports news site that's this well organized before; I give Fox Sports props for that.
Content
To be honest, we've talked about how great Fox Sports is for sports coverage in general and their specific offerings within each sport. Within each one of those sports, you can keep tabs on your favorite teams, players, divisions, scores, playoffs rankings, and so on. Basically anything related to sports or any team will be covered by Fox Sports. This is one of the most dependable sources of sports news online, and it gets updated frequently.
Fox Sports has a lot to offer. In addition to breaking sports news, there are original Fox Sports programs you can watch live or streamed after the fact. And if you register with Fox Sports, you can customize your experience by tracking all of your favorite teams.
Mobile and Desktop Experience
While the desktop experience is great, I?ve found that the smartphone and tablet versions of Fox Sports are just as well-designed and optimized. So there really isn't a reason to use Safari or the Chrome app when there's an app available on their own.
Fox Sports content is available across three different mobile apps: Fox Sports, Fox Sports Go, and Fox Now. The availability of these apps and their different features vary depending on the device you are using. The original basic Fox Sports app could use some improvement, as it is clunky to navigate and not as seamless as the desktop site. This explains its relatively low average user rating on the Apple App Store of 3.9 stars out of 5.
Pricing and Plans
With so many people cutting the cord, getting cable from a traditional provider is becoming harder and harder. However, getting cable through a cable provider like Fox Sports is still the only way to watch live broadcasts and full broadcasts after they've aired.
Suggestions that I have for Fox Sports
I would really appreciate it if Fox created a subscription option specifically for Fox Sports programs that allowed users to watch full episodes after they air (live viewing would be even better, of course). I don't want to have to sign up for a cable subscription in order to watch Fox Sports programs.
