The FilmOn App has had a tough time recently. Not only are the services losing its touch with time, but it also doesn't seem interested in reviving itself. Even today, you'll find 600 channels on the network that was available back in 2017. You'll find content from popular platforms such as ITV, CBS, and even BBC. Having said that, what should be your expectations when using this app? I'd say don't keep them too high.
What is FilmOn Live TV Chromecast?
As for finding new content, the website does offer a few recommendations, but it would be helpful if they were updated more frequently.
FilmOn is a simple and free way to enjoy TV on your laptop or your mobile phone. It provides you with an IPTV-esque experience on your phone, and the developers claim that the majority of the content on the platform is for free consumption. But is it really? After digging a little deeper, I found out that if you want to enjoy the full FilmOn experience, you will need to spend money. FilmOn has a decent website, but it would be helpful if it were updated more frequently. Additionally, the app has limited functionality without spending money on in-app purchases.
What should you expect from the FilmOn Live TV Chromecast App?
I have already mentioned the numbers above, and I won't deny that FilmOn does have a lot of content. But it is more of a quantitative approach with the developer having filled the websites with unknown channels which you won't bother to watch. Yes, there is content from popular channels as well, but that's like a fraction of the overall package. Most of the channels and streams you find on this platform won't even meet your viewing needs.
Genre & Content Addition
While the library in terms of number is impressive, there are a few areas where it falls short relative to some of the other popular streaming platforms. For instance, you can watch content from a wide range of genres on this platform, such as Action, Horror, Romance, Fantasy, Movies, Music, and Entertainment. However, to access the extended library with recent releases (which includes books from different publishers), you need to subscribe to the premium network. So it?s not exactly a free option when compared to some of the leading streaming services. Stick around because we?ll be checking out pricing and plans later in this review.
Streaming Quality
I wasn't able to stream 720p video from my free account anymore, and now I have to subscribe to the service in order to get that quality. The deeper I go into the streaming library, the more restrictive the restrictions become. On the other hand, I can stream a wide range of channels and movies from around the world, and also access video-on-demand content. However, I don't want to do it at 480p resolution - it's just not good enough for me.
Acceptable User Interface
FilmOn may not have the best design in the streaming niche, but I still appreciate the developers emphasizing on enriching the mobile experience. Having said that, based upon its pricing, if FilmOn is to compete with the likes of Netflix or Prime Video, it has an Everest to climb in terms of UI/UX.
Content Diversification
The platform boasts a diverse and large content library, as well as an easy-to-use guide and schedule. You can choose content based on location, genre, or even add your own streams!
FilmOn Live TV Chromecast App Information
In my opinion, the problem with this app is that it hasn't been updated in a while and its developer didn't do their job well. The app was last updated in July of 2017 and things have changed since then. I can't believe that FilmOn managed to rack up more than 1 million downloads on the Google Play Store considering how recently it was last updated. Devices with Android versions above 4.4.1 should be fine, but if you don't have one of those devices, you'll need to find another way to watch your favorite movies.
How to access FilmOn Live TV Chromecast?
To access FilmOn live TV, simply search for the term "FilmOn App" on Google Play Store and you'll likely find it. Install the app on your device and FilmOn will be accessible on a wide range of platforms, including PCs, smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and even over-the-top devices such as Roku.
Design
Compared to the website, the app design is better. However, given that it is considered a premium service, it?s ludicrous that the homepage has so many room for improvement. The layout and text size appear too big, and it looks as if the developers designed it in 2013 and never updated it. If you compare the app with leading streaming apps, it will feel quite cluttered. Additionally, options such as ?Local TV? do not help the interface at all.
One more thing I don't like about this app is that live content plays on the same page, but for on-demand content, the app redirects you to a new page without closing the original one. Sure, you can find the content you're looking for quickly, but is multiple tabs user-friendly? I don't think so.
App Homepage
For example, if you click on the ?Movies? option, you?ll find a list of recent and popular movies.
Inner pages
The inner pages of the app don?t seem particularly fascinating to me. The streaming page allows you to navigate and check out other content while the video is playing, so that's a positive. As for the design, you have the drop-down menu, Category Title, Search Bar, Sharing Options, and Chromecast right above the streaming window. Under these options, you'll get the resolution option. Towards the progress bar, you'll find two additional options - Cardboard and full screen.
Content
FilmOn is good but it often falls short of its expectations. For example, while it offers a comprehensive global live TV experience, it only works in a select number of US cities. This means you can't even watch content in standard definition or high definition if you're located outside of those areas.
The OVD service tries to make up for its lack of live TV by offering a wide range of on-demand content. You can choose content from a variety of genres, such as ITV, BBC, CBS, and EDM TV. However, you would hardly see it as an alternative to cutting the cord.
Desktop/Mobile experience
I tried the free and paid versions of the app and found that the difference in quality was very clear. The SD viewing experience was poor because the stream kept adjusting between 480p and 720p. On top of that, the audio quality wasn't great either. In the premium versions, the difference is noticeable but it's not as good as what you get on Prime Video or Netflix. The only positive thing I can say about the streaming experience is that there were no ads.
Plans & Pricing
FilmOn allows you to choose between two plans - monthly and yearly. The monthly plan costs around $19.95/month, whereas the yearly plan costs around $199/month. So, if you opt for a yearly plan, you'd be getting two months free.
Suggestions I have for FilmOn
If FilmOn wants to stay ahead of the streaming giant pack, it needs to get some backing from major studios. The $20/month subscription fee is hilarious, and the overall service is just okay. Forget me; no sane user would be tempted towards their service and happily agree to pay $20/month for vague content.
Conclusion
I didn't like the website or the app. There's no reason why you should use this service over Netflix, Hulu, or Prime Video. The platform lacks content, overall edge, and competent streaming. Apart from user-generated titles, there's not much you would get on this platform, and that's about it.
