Over the last few years, the landscape of the film industry has changed a lot. With the rise of streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video - all of which offer different ways to watch films - there have been a lot of changes in how films are released and how people view them.
Once upon a time, going to the movies was an activity reserved for those who had access to a movie theatre. It was a large and cumbersome undertaking, and film culture was considerably different back then. In the midst of all this, moviegoing was seen as something special and rare, with stars appearing on screens relatively infrequently.
Since the 2000s, movie theaters have evolved in different ways. In the later years of the 20th century, for instance, going to the cinema became less of a luxurious night out and more of a common activity.
Teenagers and young adults flocked to movie theaters for dates during these years. And can you blame them? What a better atmosphere to take a love interest? It's dark, you can sit elbow to elbow with your date, making the potential for physical touch not only more likely but easier to execute under the cloak of darkness. Plus, it takes the burden off of the pressure to converse that would exist on a first date at, say, a restaurant. At a movie, you and your date are automatically entertained. Plus, it gives you something to naturally talk about after the fact.
Today, the movie theater is not as popular as it once was. It used to be a regular spot for date night, family outing, and friendly gatherings, but now it is something of a novelty - something that people do sometimes to mix things up or because they had other plans that were canceled. Some people even go just for the nostalgia factor.
So, because there are so many movies available for viewing at home, people are choosing to just watch them on their computers, smartphones, and TVs. It's not really necessary anymore to go out and spend $30 or $40 to see a movie- you can watch hundreds of them for free on Netflix. Is that not the truth?
Some people feel that going to the movie theater is a waste of money. They argue that you can get the same quality of experience by watching movies at home, where you have all the equipment you need. However, I personally think that going to the movies is a unique and unrivaled experience - nothing beats seeing a film in the best possible quality. No matter how expensive your home entertainment center may be, chances are it pales in comparison to what you'll find at a movie theater.
Although the cinema is not as popular as it once was, there are still many sites and apps that make purchasing tickets easier, quicker, and more convenient than ever before.
History
Fandango was founded on April 27th, 2000. It quickly became successful, and revenue streams grew steadily for a few years. However, as movie theater chains caught on more to the internet age, they began offering their own ticket selling services through their websites. Alongside this came a new generation of moviegoers that simply printed their own tickets at home. This caused a pretty big blow for Fandango - however, it wasn't enough to sink the company.
Since 2007, Fandango has been acquired by Comcast and in 2012, announced a partnership with Yahoo! Movies. This allows Fandango to provide online movie ticketers for registered Yahoo! users. In spite of these setbacks, the company has managed to continue thriving due to smart acquisitions and corporate partnering strategies.
From there, Fandango had the funds to begin acquiring smaller companies. Between 2012 and today, Fandango has acquired Brazilian ticketing company, Ingresso; M-Go (which would later become Fandango Now); Flixster; and Rotten Tomatoes. It seems like Fandango's refusal to give up paid off for them in the long run.
Design
The Fandango website is very flashy and catches the eye with bright oranges and blues against a white background. However, it doesn't overwhelm. Carousel banners present slides of the featured content, including movie recommendations, exclusive interviews, and inside scoops on the ins and outs of Hollywood quickly.
On the homepage of Fandango.com, you'll find a scrollable horizontal window that lists all of the movies currently in theaters. It's great to be able to do this right from the home page, and it's the first thing you see when you arrive on Fandango.co.uk. Additionally, down the page a little further, you will find offers from Fandango partner companies. I don't know about you, but I'll take a coupon over an ad any day! Not that Fandango is completely replete of advertisements- they're mainly for new and upcoming movies- but they are useful in the context of the site!
Content
Furthermore, Fandango offers a subscription service that gives users access to a range of benefits, such as discounts on movie tickets and even exclusive content. So if you love movies and you want to get the most out of your entertainment experience, then subscribing to Fandango is definitely an option that you should consider.
However, there are other sections on the site as well - for what's new on streaming services, the top box office lists, trailers of upcoming films to get excited about, and movie news. Plus there are many specialized sections for film and media entertainment lovers.
Looking to stay up-to-date on all the latest movie news? Fandango has you covered! Stay informed about who's winning what and who's getting nominated for prestigious honors with our Awards Watch section, or delve into the Indie film scene with our Indie Movie Guide. Plus, fans of horror can find their own news sections, as well as families looking for information on what's coming up in the world of movies and TV. Fandango's movie news section is actually like several niche film blogs rolled into one convenient location - so there's sure to be something for everyone!
Desktop and Mobile Experience
I really like how the site is designed overall. It's just as optimized whether you're viewing it through your desktop web browser or the one on your phone. Fandango, too, I'm happy to report, has a sleek and useful app that's definitely worth checking out.
The Fandango app is rated 4.8 out of 5 stars on the Apple App Store and boasts over 1 million 5-star reviews. It's sleek and user-friendly, allowing you to buy tickets and pick seats in a matter of just a few taps of the thumb.
Pricing and Plans
There are no paid subscriptions or plans available on Fandango. Everything on the site, including tickets, is free to use. They even offer a service called Fandango VIP which comes with no extra fee and allows users to save money through rewards points, gain access to additional cross-promotional perks, receive no-stress refunds and ticket exchanges, and write movie reviews on the site. If you want to get the most out of Fandango, I don't see why you wouldn't take advantage of this free rewards program.
Suggestions that I have for Fandango
I've never had a bad experience with Fandango, as far as ticketing sites go. I suppose if I had to suggest anything to them, it might be good for them to try their hand at producing more original content so that users can stream it from their site. Even if they just did a couple short pieces, Fandango could generate exponentially more visitors (and ticket sales) with something bigger drawing people in.
Conclusion
All in all, Fandango is a great site when it comes to movie ticketing. One visit to Fandango and I am sure you will be excited about your next trip to the movies. Have fun!
