dcuniverse.com
The comic book nerds all around the world rejoiced this past year when DC Universe launched their streaming service. The website promised exclusive fan content, shows, merchandise, and much more.
I am pleased to let you know that DC Universe lives up to the hype. It is everything we want in a streaming service. Although the service is still fairly new, it blows competitors out of the water. DC Universe delivers a combination of entertainment, resources, and news.
Website Design
The website's design is terrific. The color scheme is black and white with pops of color. landing on the homepage is a very cool experience for DC fans. The website accurately emulates everything we love about the popular brand.
Navigation on DC Universe is a breeze. The primary menu is easy to see and find. From left to right your options are Movies & Tv, Comic Books, Community, News, Encyclopedia, and Shop. The search bar is further to the right and easily accessed. Profile settings can be found by clicking on the user name or profile photo.
Another interesting feature on the website is the Do Not Sell My Personal Information function. This option is not found on any other streaming website I?ve seen before. Allowing ?cookies? is a way for sites to gather information about you and create a more personalized experience on the web. DC Universe gives you the option to opt-out of them collecting any information, with the exception of those necessary to run their site. It?s a refreshing feature I would like more websites to adopt.
Content
The website DC Universe is great because it includes a lot of actual television and movies to stream as well as other means. One amazing feature is that you can read DC comic books through the website. Exclusives such as merchandise are also available to subscribers. Lastly, the website includes an encyclopedia which is arguably the most interesting part of it all.
DC is making some fun new shows and I subscribed for and enjoy the Teen Titans show the most. It is an equal mix of brilliant and hilarious, nostalgic series have also been added to the library in the form of Batman: The Animated Series, Young Justice, the original Teen Titans, and more. Some interest-peaking movies that have been added are Constantine and Watchmen.
I was really surprised when I found out that they included comic books as a subscription service. It has so many resources and you can search by your favorite characters or by genre to find something cool to read! Reading the comic is such an easy process that lets you control where you land on a page or turn one by one.
The website had exclusive merchandise that was not available to non-subscribers, however the number of offers like that are limited and not very worth the pricing. Most items are overpriced with poor quality.
While one might prefer to use a fan-made wiki if they are looking for detailed information on a favorite character, the encyclopedia is a great way to catch up on all of the characters in an easy and manageable way. It's great not to have to rely on unofficial sources for information as with DC Universe. Everything in the encyclopedia is canon, coming from the comic giants themselves.
Desktop & Mobile Accessibility
The site is laid out in a very organized fashion and everything has a purpose.
The desktop version of this streaming website is great. There are no negative things that I can think of about the design. There is a nice large slideshow banner at the top of the page right beneath the menu. It shows featured shows, news, and comics. Scrolling down the page is simple. The website is laid out in an organized fashion and everything has a purpose.
Mobile browsers have a scaled-down version of the desktop versions of websites. However, the animations look nicer on phones for some reason. Gliding down the website to view everything it has to offer is a neat experience. The mobile browser versions may be the best way to view the site. The top menu is slightly different, but otherwise, they are exactly the same as everything in the original place.
The mobile application is also fun to use. Instead of a menu on the top, it uses a menu at the bottom. The slideshow dimensions are slightly different, but the same features are used. There are no issues easily recognizable from any version of using this streaming service. Any version of DC Universe is not a problem to interact with, but my favorite was the mobile browser version.
Positives
There are many great positives about using DC Universe. One great plus is the pricing. Normally, it is the average $7.99 per month. However, if you catch a good sale on it, the cost is only $5.99 per month. That's a huge saving like that for the available content! A lot of other premium websites charge the same amount but do not offer the same amazing extra features that DC Universe provides.
The site has additional comic book material available to read, which is a wonderful option. The comic books range from the Golden Age, Silver Age, Bronze Age all the way up to the current Rebirth volumes. After reading your favorite new comic book, check out the awesome resources the site has to offer - like the encyclopedia, which is a very interesting feature. Learn more than ever about your favorite characters - and the site's two features make the subscription fee more than worth it.
The exclusive content on the streaming service makes viewers feel like they're part of a special club. The best part of the streaming service is the video content. The video and audio quality are superb, making it easy to watch shows. Seeing Harley Quinn and other exclusive shows is definitely what keeps users coming back for more. The quality of their exclusive series is unbelievable, which is a bit of a downer that the content has been somewhat slow being produced, but since the shows are so great, I'm not complaining.
Negatives
I don't really have much to say about the downfalls of DC Universe. If I had to be picky, I would mention the size of the video library. Although there are many shows and movies to watch, there is still much from the DC Universe that's missing.
Another downside to the store is the merchandise. Some of it is supposedly ?exclusive,? but it's actually not that exclusive. Plus, the materials used don't make for quality products. They look like they're made with low quality materials and are way overpriced.
Improvements Needed
Adding more video content to the digital library would be a big improvement. In terms of shows, the number of them is low. It's clear that DC Universe values quality over quantity, which is not a bad thing. However, quantity is somewhat lacking and needs attention.
Another improvement would be to offer exclusive merchandise to members. Hiring an artist to create an exclusive print would be one cool option. Possibly partnering with big brands like Funko Pop or Loungefly to create exclusive pops and bags would be another interesting way to bring unique merch to life.
Summary
Overall, I really enjoy DC Universe. This review is mostly positive! There are only a few things that could use improvement, but finding something to complain about is going to be difficult.
The website design is really cool. DC uses the perfect combination of modern clean lines and creativity to give viewers the perfect site for streaming. The video play is very smooth and toggling back and forth is also easy. I'm looking forward to watching this streaming service grow. It's going to be amazing!
