comingsoon.net
ComingSoon is a website that provides content about upcoming movies and television. There are plenty of first looks at exclusive sneak peeks at popular shows, as well as photo galleries giving viewers early access looks to shows that are in development.
I think ComingSoon is a great website. The design is appealing, and the content is varied. It covers a large number of genres, so the target audience is very wide. I'm sure it sees a good amount of traffic.
The history of Coming Soon is elusive and difficult to track down. There is no About Us page that explains the origin of the website, and there is also no wiki page anywhere stating how it came about.
Website Design
The website design is simple and the color scheme is classic black and white. The primary menu looks similar to a DVD menu and really brings a theme to the website.
The website is easy to navigate and the search bar is easily identifiable. There is a clear branding present on the site, with articles stacked vertically on most pages. The way it's organized makes reading the headline and slug excerpt easy. There is also a nice graphic collage of popular articles on the front page.
There are some advertisements present, but they're not really overwhelming. There's a large ad banner above the header, and as you scroll it one pops up at the footer. The one on the bottom is easy to get rid of, but the header ad stays in place. They don't interfere with readability when it comes to articles; however, the header ad would be less distracting if it were placed somewhere else.
Content
The website has a lot of content to read, with tabs divided among movies, television shows, streaming content, games, trailers, and DVDs.
Many people have written reviews of recently premiered shows and movies and the website also has lists of titles released on specific days. This is especially helpful when viewers don't have a specific title in mind, but want to watch something.
Movie categories have an organized system that lists titles in chronological order by release date. Titles are further categorized by month and then day. There are multiple ways to sort the list including release dates, just added, and new releases.
The trailers tab is another great category on the website. In this section, readers can find official movie trailers, teasers, and promotional clips. There are tons of trailers updated daily to this portion of the site.
I really enjoy the streaming section of the website. There are subcategories for Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. There are reviews, photo galleries, and announcements about features from these streaming services. It's a great place to see what's new on the most popular streaming platforms.
Desktop & Mobile Accessibility
The desktop version of the ComingSoon website is great. It has a clean, modern look. There is nothing particularly special about the website, but it has a certain charm. It feels familiar but with updated and unique content. The navigation is smooth and there are no glaring flaws.
Unfortunately, there is no ComingSoon application for mobile browsers. However, the mobile browser functions well. It is a scaled-down version of the website. The mobile browser is optimized for viewing on cell phones. The flow of the articles is good; they are not bunched together. The text remains large enough to be readable. Overall, there is nothing wrong with mobile design.
Positives
The website has some good points - it's basic, but does what it's supposed to. The menu is a nice touch - it matches the overall theme of the website perfectly.
ComingSoon is a website that provides interesting and unique content. A lot of other websites put together lists of entertainment and photos, but Comingsoon cuts to the chase in articles, providing enough detail without filler. The genres covered are diverse and plentiful, and the writers do a great job of linking to interesting articles for even more reading pleasure.
The website has a great layout with simple and sleek design. The articles are well organized and easy to read. The flow sets up a direction for the reader's eyes to follow. There is also a pleasant sidebar with the most popular headings.
Many website users have complained about the comingsoon.com website's search bar not being legible. Thankfully, this website has taken viewers' needs into consideration by making the search bar plain to see and located in the top right corner.
Negatives
There are a few things that I don't like about ComingSoon. Most of them are easy to fix. Some of them aren't a very big issue. A very minor issue is the advertisements. It's a small problem, but large header ads are eyesores.
Almost everything works properly on ComingSoon. I didn't have trouble with bad links or pop-ups surprising me while clicking around. However, one link did not work properly- the channel category on the main menu. I am unsure of where the link was supposed to take viewers, but it would not open. There was a drop-down menu that had the names Shock Til You Drop and Superhero Hype. Upon further inspection, the names are sister websites to ComingSoon. Shock Til You Drop is the horror section of Comingsoon, and Superhero Hype is a separate website that features super-hero and comic content.
Some pages have a never-ending scroll that makes getting to the footer menu ridiculously hard. Also, the website lacks an About Us page, which I searched high and low for more information about the company to no avail.
I don't like how the margins on the website's background are so wide. The background is plain black, and it would be much more appealing if the margins were lowered so more articles could fit. At the very least, this would make a better sidebar.
Improvements Needed
I can't think of many suggestions for this website. The design of this site is very simple. Its sole purpose is to inform readers about upcoming entertainment media. They easily achieve this goal.
If the "endless scroll" feature were eliminated, it would save a lot of time and irritation. Instead, a button that says "load more" would be much more helpful and efficient.
The background margins would be an easy fix if the margins were taken out just a little bit more. It would provide more room for extra articles, or at least between them.
Summary
ComingSoon is a website that not only provides up-to-date information about popular movies and tv shows, but also release dates and details about the website's history. Although there isn't much information available about the site's past, it remains one of the most reliable sources for entertainment news.
The website is easy to navigate and a pleasure to interact with. All of the links work properly and the search bar is easy to find. Another important thing the website gets right is its use of the sidebar.
