As a kid, I loved going to Blockbuster. Whenever my grandfather proposed going there to rent movies or games on Saturdays or Sundays, I would light up. Everything about going to Blockbuster was fun. It's truly sad that kids born after 2010 won't ever experience the joys of going there, picking out a couple movies, and then bringing those movies home to watch with friends and family.
I know that I'm probably dating myself here, getting nostalgic for a time when life was more rooted in the physical world than the digital (back in my day!), and there are myriad benefits to movie streaming sites; admittedly, simply logging onto a site like Netflix and being able to instantly choose from hundreds of movies is an experience in its own right, certainly a more efficient way to go about it. But there's something to it, I think, to leaving the house in order to browse actual shelves lined with actual VHS or DVDs.
When I turn on Netflix or Hulu, there is a good chance, nine times out of ten, that I already have an idea of what I am going to watch. And then once my movie streaming site of choice loads up, it is guaranteed that I will be able to watch the movie I had in mind. Even though at the time it didn't necessarily feel this way, in hindsight one of the perks of going to rent a movie from Blockbuster was the possibility that they wouldn't have any copies left. In that case well you had to get creative pick out a backup. This is precisely how I stumbled upon some of my favorite movies - because they were all out of the one that I came for but I wasn't going to leave empty-handed!
Oh, there was nothing better than realizing that you got to Blockbuster just in time to snag the very last copy of the movie that you did come for! Call me old-fashioned if you like, but this sense of scarcity and urgency only added to the fun.
I could go on and on about my memories of Blockbuster for hours (nostalgia is a powerful drug), but don't worry, I will spare you that. Instead, today we will look at how Blockbuster has managed to stay in the movie rental game after the streaming revolution all but put them out of business.
Although it is far from the movie rental empire that Blockbuster once reigned over, the company has survived into the age of streaming thanks to its Scandinavian movie streaming rental sites, such as Blockbuster.de. Why Blockbuster neglected to expand its movie streaming services beyond just Denmark, Finland, Sweden, and Norway is beyond me - it stands to reason that this company would have international brand recognition that would have aided them towards doing fairly well in the movie streaming rental space - nevertheless, it is still nice to see that Blockbuster hasn't been completely wiped from existence in 2021.
Despite being a less fun option than going to a Blockbuster store to rent movies, games, and snacks, streaming rentals from Blockbuster do still have that special something that made the company one of America's most beloved companies of the 20th century.
But does Blockbuster really have what it takes to compete with some of the most cutting-edge movie streaming sites on the web today? Or should we just lay them to rest, once and for all, and let their legacy live on untainted? Well, there is only one way to find out for sureâand that is to dive in and take a closer look at everything that Blockbuster.de has to offer. Who's up for a trip to Blockbuster today?
Design
Blockbuster.de is instantly reminiscent of going to the store to rent a movie. They have retained their iconic blue and yellow color scheme, and the site wastes no time before immersing you in a highly intuitive movie browsing experience. You will be greeted by an extra-large banner which displays featured and suggested titles. This banner will either automatically alternate movie posters (along with their rental price), or you can scroll through at your leisure. The choice is yours.
Scroll down a bit and you can browse Blockbuster much in the same way that you would browse any of the best movie streaming sites on the web. Peruse a series of menus that are organized by category and genre. Browse by Blockbuster Hits, Popular Brands, Popular Movie Series, etc. Unlike many movie streaming sites, however, Blockbuster has opted to not utilize the typical side-scrolling horizontal menus. Instead, you will find a gallery format. This may not be for everyone, but it more closely mirrors the experience of browsing movies at Blockbuster, so I will let it slide.
In addition to its intuitive and user-friendly menus, the site also boasts some of the most up-to-date streaming movie information on the web. For example, if you want to know when a particular movie is released on DVD or Blu-Ray, or find out where it's available for streaming on Netflix or Amazon Prime Instant Video, Blockbuster?s got you covered.
Blockbuster.de employs very responsive and dynamic menus that allow for easy navigation. Scrolling back up to the top of the homepage will display the site menu bar which contains sections such as Movies, Series, Children's Films, and Upcoming Movies. Hovering your cursor over any one of these sections will trigger a convenient dropdown menu that allows you to choose between specific genres or browse all movies in that section. In addition to its intuitive menus, Blockbuster also has some of the most up-to-date streaming movie information on the web. For instance, if you want to know when a particular movie is released on DVD or Blu-Ray, or find out where it's available for streaming on Netflix or Amazon Prime Instant Video, Blockbuster has got you covered.
Content and Features
Blockbuster offers some great features that other movie streaming sites would envy. For example, each movie comes complete with credit info, extras, trailers, and IMDb reviews and ratings. Plus, you can "like" titles as you browse in order to have easy access, should you want to rent or buy them later.
The thing that really stands out to me about Blockbuster is the index of actors. This way, when you watch a movie with one of your favorite actors in it, you can just click into their profile and see what else Blockbuster has available with them in it. I don't see why every movie streaming site doesn't employ something like this, personally - this is a great example of the kinds of above-and-beyond features that I expect to see from one of the best movie streaming sites in the world.
As far as content is concerned, Blockbuster is just as versatile now as it ever was. You'll find classics, new hit movies, iconic series, and even Netflix and Hulu originals. Don't expect to go to Blockbuster to rent or buy movies that have just come out- although if you wait a little while upon release, there is a good chance it will show up here (as was always the case with Blockbuster).
Mobile and Desktop Experience
Blockbuster appears to have adapted well to the 21st century model of movie rentals. The site is dynamic, responsive, and top of the line, and they also have cross-platform availability, putting some of the so-called best movie streaming sites to shame. Rent and buy movie streams on an array of devices, including Android and iOS, PlayStation 4, Apple TV, Android TV, and select Smart TV brands.
The apps, websites, and other services are just as good as the desktop site. It may come as a surprise to some, but Blockbuster is one of the more modernly accessible, competitive movie streaming sites out there in 2021.
Pricings and Plans
I think the cost of renting and buying digital movies on Blockbuster.de is about right. Most rentals cost under 49 kr, and some go as low as 19 kr. Purchases range from 49 kr to 169 kr for new hit movies.
