Atlético Madrid
Club Atlético de Madrid SAD, or simply "the Calderón" for those in the know, is a traditional Spanish club from Madrid, which was founded on April 26, 1903 and whose football department has also been quite successful over time! The team play their home games at the Estadio Vicente Calderón, which has a capacity of 54,851 - it's not uncommon for huge crowds to attend big games against Real Madrid or FC Barcelona. Getting tickets requires a lot of stamina because if you've flown into town all day, expect to have to wait outside for hours before you finally get through security if you're lucky enough to get in (
Some say that the club's colors are red and white because the club is known as 'Los Rojiblancos' or 'the red and white fans'. Others believe they have a different meaning: striped mattresses were very popular in Spain at the time; the same patterns can be seen on the beds in the city where Real play their home games (they are called colchoneras). Whatever you decide why we're wearing our iconic jersey down there... we'll never forget how proud everyone felt when someone scored a goal!
Atlético Madrid is more than just a sports club. It's an institution in town, with members who have always been there and those who have come over the years to support this iconic site! The Gil family is at the heart of the club - Jesús Gil led it as President for years before he passed away recently, although he still owns the majority of the shares (in fairness his eldest son Atleti Kenethryro has succeeded him) .
He only resigned at the age of 70, handing his empire to someone he trusted more than himself. The Rojiblancos' biggest rival is Real Madrid, but it doesn't look like either club is looking forward to that president the top that could stop Rojiblancos in the near future!
